Story Commissions are directly linked to the main plot, often featuring unique battles and pivotal narrative moments.
They are split between City content and HDD content, with key narrative moments being recorded in the Video Archive, while combat and exploration events typically get recorded in the HDD.
Once a Story Commission has been completed, it cannot be replayed in its entirety. Only the "Special Event" dialogue can be rewatched from the Video Archive, while any combat or exploration events that do get recorded in the HDD are infinitely replayable and can later be attempted on "Hard Mode".
City[]
"City" Story Commissions (not to be confused with City Commissions) are not recorded in the HDD and are not replayable, although the Special Event dialogue can be rewatched through the Video Archive, or through any connected HDD content. These commissions are typically linked to the main plot of Zenless Zone Zero through Phaethon's Story, or they will be part of an Agent Story or Special Episode.
H.D.D.[]
These are commissions that are logged in the H.D.D. system for replayability. They are allocated a "Chapter" to notate when in the story they are supposed to take place. HDD-based story commissions have several ways that they can be played.
Easy[]
"Easy Mode" refers to (re-)playing through the commission as it happened initially in the story. Easy Mode playthroughs will include all Special Event dialogue, in-Hollow dialogue and will also typically feature lower-level enemies, or a lower difficulty rating with no time-limit. These commissions will also feature any trial Agents that were available initially in the story.
Hard[]
"Hard Mode" will unlock for a commission once it has been completed on Easy. These commissions typically feature higher-level enemies, or a higher difficulty rating, while also being timed and having different completion criteria. Any trial Agents that were available on Easy Mode, will not be made available on Hard Mode, meaning the player must complete these with their own team of Agents.
Array Mode[]
Upon the launch of the game in Version 1.0, the vast majority of H.D.D.-based Story Commissions and Exploration Commissions, alongside Hollow Zero: Withered Domain, featured "Array Mode", which refers to exploring Hollows through the "TV Screens", moving tile-by-tile and encountering various Hollow Events. In Version 1.2, it was decided that Array Mode would no longer feature in Story Commissions going forward, and would later be replaced by something else. In Version 1.4, the vast majority of pre-existing Story Commissions were reworked, with Array Mode being replaced in favour of "Marcel Maze" gameplay (aka "Eous Gameplay").
Instead of being completely removed, the older versions of the Story Commissions featuring Array Mode were moved under a toggleable UI switch, allowing players to experience them as they were upon launch, if they so chose. Certain commissions that were not reworked, or could not be reworked, were instead re-labelled to be [Story: Array] in the H.D.D.
Rank-Up[]
Rank-Up Commissions are a subtype of Story Commissions, which become available upon reaching certain Inter-Knot Levels, and are the only way to raise Proxy Rank. There are 4 such commissions, all being given to the player by Shepherd upon reaching Inter-Knot levels 20, 30, 40, and 50 respectively.

Change History[]
- Story Commissions in the HDD, comprising Chapters "Prologue - Ch. 1", "Ch. 2", "Ch. 2 Interlude", and "Ch. 3" were reworked to have the "Array Mode" gameplay replaced with "Marcel Maze" gameplay. The older "Array Mode" versions were made entirely optional under an added toggle switch in the UI.
- Certain Story Commissions kept their "Array Mode" version as the primary version and were re-labelled accordingly.
- The subtypes (e.g: [Investigation], [Combat], [Special]) of all currently available Story Commissions were changed to be either [Story], or [Story: Array].
- Story Commission was released.
