Kill. This is a rule created to break rules, a submission made to end submission, a curse forged to eliminate curses... This is... a Hoshimi's fate.
—Old Voice, Dead-End Express
Tailless is a weapon in Zenless Zone Zero. It is a heirloom katana forged from Etheric matter by the first head of the Hoshimi Family; it is able to create Foxfire, a unique form of Etheric energy, and weave illusions out of it.[1]
Official Description[]
Ethereal-Slaying Katana: "Tailless"
A cursed blade originally wielded by the first head of the Hoshimi family and passed down from generation to generation. Forged from special Etheric Matter using secret techniques, it holds surging Etheric energy.
However, under the effect of the sealing sheath, "Tailless" is merely a sharp blade wielded by Miyabi.
Maybe only when the seal is lifted will we uncover the story behind this blade.[2]
As visible in-game and mentioned by Yanagi in her journal, Miyabi's katana has a fingerprint lock to prevent others from unsheathing it.[3]
Overview[]
Tailless is a katana forged by and passed down through the Hoshimi Family. Its source of power is said to be a "curse" for every head of the Hoshimi Family, which comes at the price of consuming the strength and sanity of those who rely on it, making them spiral in a homicidal frenzy; the fate of a Hoshimi is "to kill". It has taken the lives of many as sacrifices, including Miyabi's Mother.[1] Hoshimi Miyabi, the blade's current owner, has managed to strike a cooperation deal with the souls of the sacrificed trapped inside it, in order to rewrite the Hoshimi Family's fate: she swore to repay the injustices that forced them to be sacrificed and make a legend out of Tailless, and in return the cursed katana will heed Miyabi and only slay evil. This has caused one of the souls to dub her "the second most arrogant person they have met,"[1] with "Swordmaster" presumably being the first.
